'Sound Detectives'

In Term 4, students are exploring various sounds that surround them on a daily basis and learning to understand how sound is created.

In Week 4, Year 3 students walked up to Hurley Park, so they could to be exposed to how sound travels. Three sound producing devices were used and distance was increased during the experiment.
Drum and cricket bat

A drum, whistle and cricket bat were manipulated to create sound, by hitting, blowing and tapping to create noise. Students began at a distance of 5m away from the sound source. Over time the distance was increased to 10m, 25m and finally 50m.

Students made various observations and were able to express that the further they got away from the sound source, the longer it took from them to hear the sound. Students could see the motion made to create the sound, but the sound took longer to reach them, before they heard it.

The discovery that light travels quicker than sound was likened to real life experience of thunder and lightning.

'Who Really Discovered Australia?'

In Term 3, students were exposed to and learnt about several early explorers and the unit concluded with the creation of a board game.

On Thursday 10th October, we visited Kamay Botany Bay National Park, in Kurnell. The weather turned out to be a very hot and windy day. The students in Year 3, had a blast and enjoyed all aspects of the day, from the drive in the nice air-conditioned coach, to the monument walk down by the waterfront, then a bush walk where they got to taste test leaves and the day ended with a visit to the museum.

          'Round and Round We Go'

In Term 2, each week students learnt about various cycles that surround our everyday lives. We explored:
- Day and Night
- Seasons of the Year
- Lifecycle of the Frog
- Lifecycle of the Butterfly
- Lifecycle of the Spider
- Plant Lifecycle
- Water Cycle

In Week 9, students had the opportunity to design and make their own cycle.

Students really enjoyed creating their own masterpiece. Enjoy watching the creative minds of the students in 3 Blue and the masterpieces they came up with.
